| Step 9: Connect the two semicircles: |

| Select the right semicircle. Shift-click to add the left semicircle to the selection. Choose Object->Splines/Lines->Connect Paths to join the start of the second path selected (the left semicircle) to the start of the first path selected (the right semicircle). |

If you select the paths in the wrong order, you’ll get something like this. Just choose Edit->Undo and select the objects in the opposite order. |
