i mourn the poisoning of air, water, land, genes....the mass destruction and annihilation of her other sentient Beings: the rooted ones, the flying ones, the swimming ones, the 4-leggeds, those that creep, crawl, burrow and slither....upon this Earth.
i mourn the defeat of humanity, by humanity itself.
and yet, paradoxically, i come here today to participate in celebrating: the Xistance, the ongoing survival, of Art.....amidst the madness that consumes this planet and the consciousness. Art, as spoken and written words revealing Truth, in a whirld of lies and propaganda. Art, as movement in dance, theatre performance, acting out dissent. Art, as visualizing and manifesting Beauty and raw emotion, in areas of ugliness, war, paralysis and fear. Art, as song and music that lifts voices and spirits to a higher place, when souls are downpressed. Art that attests to the potential genius of Being Human, in a time when the Xperiment of the creation of human beings is looking like one big, bad, foolish mistake. It is by no coincidence that we come together today, for this performance-’ritual of mourning’, in this Center for the Arts....where we will, at the same time, be celebrating and Xpressing, as artists and activists, who we are, what we do, and how we feel.....at this time.
Alice Walker said, “Despite our hunger, we can never possess more than this: peace, in a garden of our own”....... ‘nuff said.
